Course Summary

Covering everything from public health and food safety to environmental protection, private sector housing improvement and occupational health and safety, our environmental health degree equips you with everything you need to enter a wide variety of careers. The only fully-accredited environmental health degree in Canada, our BSc Environmental Health gives you the knowledge, certifications and skills to confidently enter into a career as an environmental health officer across all sectors. You’ll explore the relationship between professional, domestic and leisure environments, build your understanding of their impact and learn the skills to assess and improve environmental health in a variety of settings. Get transferable skills and hands-on experience with us. We’re the only undergraduate degree accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). By studying with us you’ll get access to specialist teaching and learning spaces, including a food inspection laboratory and a Grade 2 microbiology laboratory. Our guest lectures and industry links will give you the opportunity to further enhance your knowledge of areas including practical food inspection, food safety, health and safety, and private sector housing. Once you’ve completed your environmental health course, CIEH learning portfolio and professional interview, you’ll gain a Certificate of Registration from the Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB), which means you’ll be qualified as an Environmental Health Officer. When it comes to support, you’ll be matched with a Personal Tutor to get the backing you need. You’ll also get support from our Student Learning and Graduate Academic Assistants who have personal experience in your subject. Your degree – teamed with your Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) certification – will let you thrive in a wide variety of careers. Course Content

Year 1 and Year 2 are focused on developing the essential knowledge, skills and theory in environmental health and the underpinning scientific principles. You will study a range of key subjects, which include housing, pollution, food safety, and occupational health and safety. In Year 3 there is focus on effective environmental and public health interventions and professional competence. You will undertake professional examinations and study for a dissertation in your chosen environmental health topic area. As well as gaining an in-depth knowledge of the subject, you will also gain the ability to investigate environmental health issues in a range of contexts and apply your knowledge of environmental health stressors to solve complex problems. You will be able to interpret data and design novel solutions to environmental health issues, as well as performing practical food inspections. You will gain effective communication and leadership in Environmental Health settings and develop academic research strategies and critical writing.
